Last weekend was an important milestone for The Picture House, Campbeltown, which has been showing films for 100 years.
A number of other momentous milestones have been reached & marked this week, so, today’s #5aday is the week in numbers…
- 13.1 miles in 1.58 – Last Sunday’s Mull of Kintyre half marathon where Mum & I raised over £1,000 for the cinema’s Centenary restoration project.
- 60 years ago today the Queen was crowned, aged 25. While the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated last year, the coronation took place over a year after the death of her father King George VI.
- 60 years since Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the 1st climbers to reach the summit of Everest on 29 May 1953.
- 70 years since my grandmother was crossing the Atlantic on her own in the middle of the Battle of the Atlantic to marry my grandfather who she met 4 years before in Halifax, Canada.
- 100 years of cinema – Last Sunday we had a fabulous birthday party for The Picture House which included fireworks, a letter from the Queen & The Great Gatsby.
20 years ago my grandmother wrote a short story about her experience of crossing the Atlantic. I’ve just reread ‘Fifty Years On’ – a tale of romance, adventure & courage. She was obviously a remarkable women & I’m immensely proud of her. G x
